What is Twitter?
Twitter is an online news and social networking service where users post and interact with other individuals by tweeting. Users communicate through short messages known as tweets where you post content that is useful, interesting, and entertaining for anyone who follows you on the site.
Some people use Twitter to discover and follow interesting people and companies online, but some people don't use Twitter as a social media platform at all. Personally, I use Twitter often to view entertaining and relatable content. I also use the app to follow some of my favorite celebrities or leaders and keep up with TV shows or series that I watch.
By being in this class though, I was tasked with using Twitter as more of a professional platform to learn and share content related to the media. Using Twitter was very beneficial throughout the course. We were able to keep up with trends, developments, news, and popular stories happening all around us. Twitter also helped us gain experience in the social media world and how we can use social media in a more proficient and practiced way.
Based off of my experience, I will break down valuable areas of Twitter, downfalls I think the platform contains, and I even weigh in on the future of Twitter. I highlight each point below:
Engagement
I liked being able to engage with other classmates online by sharing intriguing and thought provoking content that led to quality discussions. I think by using the app, we were able to gain experience through social media by using the tool to learn and expand our knowledge. Twitters platform is engaging by being able to communicate through mentions and replies with other users online.
Twitter is Easy and Quick
Timeliness matters and Twitter is a tool that makes communication quick and easy. Twitter is an easy way to connect with others and have meaningful conversation. The platform is very conversational and that's what creates most of the content on the site. Twitter is designed for engagement known as tweeting, retweeting, replying, and liking content that you wish to. It’s an easy process to connect and interact with other users.
The use of hashtags on Twitter is really valuable and effective. This assignment was similar to posting content on a discussion board, but by using Twitter we were able to be a lot broader and more engaging with our content. We were able to find diverse topics of content to share to each of our followers, but we could locate this information in a centralized location by using our class hashtag. Having the hashtag made our discussions easier to follow and locate because our content was categorized and more relevant.
Broad Audience
Celebrities, bloggers, companies, brands and many other individuals use Twitter to interact and communicate on the web. There is a broad audience that you can reach by being present on Twitter and using it to its full advantage. There is also a wide array of potential individuals you can reach, interact with, and communicate with through Twitter to gain knowledge and share insight.
Downfall
A lot of similar content was shared throughout each week. Some weeks there was a lot going on throughout the world and there was various content that we could share, but some weeks were duller and it was hard to find relevant content that sparked conversation. This was why it was important to get creative and think of new ways to spread content! I think this also highlighted the importance of creativity and originality on social media. Many of us in the future will be working for brands or companies where we utilize social media consistently and we have to learn to vary content. We will have to think of creative ways to get content out that is engaging to consumers and creates visibility for the brand were promoting.
The Future
Twitter continues to evolve and expand its platform to keep up with the advances of technology. Twitter is unique in its form of communication, but it is not as popular as some might believe. Though this is true, I think Twitter has the most potential to last out of the various platforms of social media. Twitter is used in very different ways than any other social media platform and it offers users the ability to engage with brands, celebrities, and influencers easily. For that, I don't think that Twitter is going anywhere. I believe it is here to stay and that we will see it continue to transform and adapt!
