In my fourth blog post, we are going to focus on two of the most popular streaming services to differentiate from. Netflix and Hulu are our main focus areas for this post and we are going to breakdown each key element relating to each brand!

Netflix is an American media-services provider based out of Los Gatos, California that was founded in 1997. Netflix is the world’s 10thlargest internet company by revenue. The brand is the world’s leading internet entertainment service with 130 million paid memberships in over 190 countries. The service consists of TV series, documentaries and feature films across a wide variety of genres and languages. Members can watch as much as they want at anytime and anywhere, and they can do this all without commercials. Netflix offers three different plans to choose from including a Basic program for $7.99 a month, a Standard plan for $10.99 a month, and a Premium plan for $13.99 a month.

Brand Marketing

  • Original series, exclusive material. Netflix has produced some of the best TV shows over the past few years including Stranger Things, House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, and more.

  • Broad mix of programming along with original shows and movies.

  • Brand voice is consistent and makes each person feel like you’re a friend of the brand.

Social/Digital Media Strategy

  • Voice is consistent across all of their social media channels. They use a sense of humor to be relatable and create engagement.

  • Authentic voice. They brand isn’t formal, especially on Twitter, when interacting with followers. In order to remain relatable, the brand maintains a casual voice.

  • Promotes its own content in a compelling way. They post videos to Facebook often with trailers of what’s coming to Netflix.

  • Social media engagement and presence.

  • Netflix socks – a project launched when the brand listened to customers and realized that many viewers were falling asleep while watching shows. The socks were able to detect when users dozed off, and paused the show they were watching instead of continuing on to further episodes.

Mobile App

  • You can watch Netflix on many streaming devices, including TV, Apple TV, Roku, tablets, and smartphones.

  • You can download the app and have access to all your favorite shows and movies just as you would on your TV.

  • Can download shows and movies to watch without Wi-Fi.

Hulu is an American entertainment company that provides “over-the-top media services” based out of Los Angeles, California. The service is primarily known for instant streaming of TV series and carrying current and past episodes of many series. Since its launch in 2008, Hulu has been at the forefront of entertainment and technology by providing services to more than 20 million subscribers in the United States. The Hulu streaming service is divided into a subscription, ad-supported for $8 per month and an ad-free for $12 per month. Hulu with Live TV is $40 per month with ads or $44 per month for ad-free services.

Brand Marketing

  • Hulu with Live TV allows subscribers to watch live and on-demand TV programming from popular networks. This allows access to live programming without the need for a cable or satellite subscription.

  • Teaming up with Spotify to offer students a bundle of Hulu, Showtime, and Spotify Premium for a price of $4.99 a month.

  • Use of celebrities to promote brand campaign – “Better Ruins Everything” marketing efforts.

Social/Digital Media Strategy

  • Speed with which Hulu offers episodes after they air. In most cases, the shows are available as early as the day after they air.

  • Sharing content that users will enjoy and be able to engage with.

  • Form a connection with users.

  • Create tangible content such as sneak peeks, gifs of TV’s greatest moments, custom work and content from the brand.

  • Become a service people love by being fun and relatable.

Mobile App

  • The Hulu app makes it easier to watch TV on your phone.

  • Must have Wi-Fi to watch on your app.

Netflix has long been a fan favorite among streaming services due to its original content and the amount of content offered, but Hulu is a part of the competition now. Both services are highly popular, but Netflix has the edge on original content and Hulu gains the edge on timeliness and speed of airing episodes to their site.
